As some of you may know, my mom has been in the world of design for over 20 years. Recently she moved to beautiful Malibu, and her new boho chic home is to die for. The home itself is so 50's retro, but her bohemian style gives it the perfect edge. Filled with spiritual mementos and designer finishings, this place is any stylish hippies sanctuary. Your surroundings are everything, I'm always more inspired and motivated when I'm home in Malibu.
Below are some interior design tips I've learned from my mom over the years:
Light, bright & airy! A neutral sofa is the perfect canvas for layering decorative pillows. The artwork above the sofa not only serves as a pop of color, but is an interesting focal point that pulls together the entire look of the room.
Trays everywhere! They can easily be moved if you are entertaining and they are a perfect foundation for interesting and meaningful objects. Magazines and coffee table books not only look chic but serve a purpose. They're always great conversation starters and reading material for your guests.
Bringing the outside in! Taking outside elements from your surroundings and bringing them into your home is a refreshing inexpensive way to personalize your home. I love how my mom builds in constant reminder of living your best life into her decor.
Growing up there was never a time that there weren't fresh flowers around our home. My mom always says live animals and fresh flowers/plants are the best way to bring good energy into your space!
Bringing wooden elements into your home can give it a natural and rustic feel. This chandelier is handmade by a local artisan in LA, supporting the artists in your community is a way to add unique items to your household that no one else will have!
Personalized objects should reflect who lives in the space and tell a story of who lives in your home. Crystals for good energy and happy buddha's are reminders of peace and happiness.
Layering carpets adds interest and fulfills a purpose of covering stark hardwood floors. The dark denim sofa is a great base for the tribal Native American vibes of this room. Another great tip, the artwork here is actually a vintage scarf my mom found online and had framed.
Most of the decor in this room is from my moms New York apartment, which had a more contemporary feel. So she changed out the artwork and added fresh elements such as the bohemian tassels on this otherwise very modern lamp.
The textured tray and unexpected colored flowers takes this lucite coffee table to the next level.
Leaning a mirror against an open wall will make your space appear bigger and will also fill up an otherwise bare wall.
This amazing piece was also from a local artisan in the ever cool Venice beach. Another tip, if you have a fire place, hide your wood in a chic basket or hamper.
Don't ever be afraid to mix elements from different styles. It's the best way to express your unique personality through decor!
